The transition from college to employment is a moment of opportunity, fear, and hope. A lifetime of learning comes to an end and a career beckons. For some college graduates, a different path calls: a path of service and deeper learning.

For graduates who set aside a year of service through a program like Jubilee’s Episcopal Urban Internship Program, their career is not derailed or delayed, it is enriched by a deeper understanding of the human experience. In some cases it is a period of discernment that leads to full time work in nonprofit service or to ordained ministry. For those who finish the year and enter a career in the for profit sector, they begin their career with a unique perspective and priceless experience.

We have all seen the commercials for fitness centers. Young fit people are hard at work shedding weight and improving their physical health. It is an image that convinces many people to join a gym and get in shape, but not everyone.

A gym can be an intimidating place to tackle the difficult task of being healthy. Whether it is because a person doesn’t have the right workout gear, or feels culturally out of place, many people forgo the opportunity to embrace health a gym can offer.

That is why Jubilee offers fitness classes in familiar environments for low-income residents in our community. Churches and schools are often the cultural and social hub of life for families in the neighborhoods surrounding Jubilee sites. Because of this, Jubilee has had amazing success offering exercise opportunities to a population that would not be comfortable going to a commercial fitness center.

For a donation of $1, anyone can join a Jubilee class and start on the road to good health.

Boxing can reduce violence in our communities. The statement seems misplaced considering the fact that boxing involves people punching each other. However, the discipline, relationship building, and mentoring involved in Jubilee’s boxing program helps youth focus their energy off the streets and surrounded by people who care for them.

Whether it is boxing, martial arts, or soccer; the combination of exercise and skill development found in sports is an incredible tool for building the character necessary to avoid the pitfalls of urban life. Idle hands make for trouble. That is why Jubilee invests in activities that attract the interest and commitment of youth in our neighborhoods. Every day spent at the punching bag is another day off the streets.
