Benefits
EUIP provides housing, health insurance, and assistance with transportation. Interns receive a monthly stipend to pay for food, gas, auto insurance, entertainment, etc. The intern year begins the last week of August and continues through August 15th of the following year. Interns receive two weeks vacation, which they must have approved by worksite supervisors. (Interns who work in a school setting follow the school calendar.)
AmeriCorps
EUIP interns are members of AmeriCorps, a program of the Corporation for National Service. EUIP participates in AmeriCorps through the Catholic Network of Volunteer Service/AmeriCorps Education Awards Program (CNVS/AEAP).
AmeriCorps Education Awards are given to AmeriCorps Members who successfully complete a required term of service. An education award can be used:
- To repay qualified, existing, or future student loans.
- To pay all or part of the cost of attending a qualified institution of higher education (including certain vocational programs).
- To pay expenses incurred while participating in an approved school-to-work program.
CNVS/AEAP members typically earn an education award of $4,725 after successfully completing 1700 service hours.
An intern’s participation in EUIP does not guarantee that an intern will qualify for AmeriCorps benefits.
Location
EUIP is currently housed at St. Stephen’s, Hollwood: 6125 Carlos Avenue, Los Angeles, CA, 90028.
Beginning in August 2010, EUIP will open a second house at St. Luke’s, Long Beach: 525 East Seventh Street, Long Beach, CA, 90813.
We try to partner with agencies that are possible to reach using public transportation, and provide additional assistance for interns to purchase monthly transit passes. Interns are also allowed to bring their own cars if they wish. The program owns a limited number of cars for interns to share in case public transportation is not an option.
